Today I received my first ever hoax email, apparently from BRD-Societe Generale claiming a 20€ compensation for filling in a satisfaction survey. Nothing really complicated, the link provided in the email redirects to a site that, of course, does not belong to BRD.

BRD Hoax email

What I do not understand is the reason why the creators of the website ask for the PIN code of any credit card. I can understand all the other fields, but not the PIN code one.

Anyway, the reason why I am writing this post is to highlight something else: BRD’s response to this threat. After receiving the email and naturally checking out the website, I decided to notify BRD about this and opened their website to get their emergency phone number. Before searching any further for this detail I opened the Security Alert section and found details about this fraud attempt. On the page there were details about the email and the required actions if you have submitted your credit card information on the hoax page.

As instructed I have also forwarded the email to BRD in order to help them identify the sender of the email and received an out-of-office notification mentioning at the end about this hoax email.

I hope that the threat will be taken down soon and would like to congratulate BRD for their notification notes.

In the end I am giving you a pice of advice in case you don’t know about this by now: no bank will EVER request your PIN code at any time and you should deny access to it to anyone.
